New Book Chronicles the History of Boston Pride: A Journey Through Activism, Celebration, and Community
Boston, MA — October 14, 2024 — Shodan Press is thrilled to announce the release of The Rise and Fall of Boston Pride: The Rise of a Movement, The Fall of an Organization, a comprehensive look at the rich and complex history of Boston Pride. Authored by Daniel Joseph Gonzalez, the book traces the evolution of the city’s LGBTQ+ movement, capturing the spirit, struggles, and triumphs that have defined Boston Pride over the past five decades.
Drawing from archival records, personal diaries, and never-before-seen photographs, The Rise and Fall of Boston Pride dives deep into the grassroots origins of the organization in the early 1970s. It examines the pivotal role Boston Pride played in advancing LGBTQ+ rights both locally and nationally, highlighting key moments such as the first Boston Pride march in 1971, legal battles for marriage equality, the ongoing fight for transgender rights, and the racial challenges that lead to rise of Boston Pride 4 the People.
Through vivid storytelling, readers will get a glimpse into the lives of the trailblazers who founded Boston Pride, as well as the contemporary activists who continue to challenge social norms and push for equality. The book also captures the joy, resilience, and camaraderie of the annual Pride parades, which have become iconic cultural events in the city, drawing hundreds of thousands of participants and spectators each year.
The Rise and Fall of Boston Pride arrives several years after the New Boston Pride Committee, Inc. chose to shut down events in 2021 after significant backlash to their programming and leadership. This is the only book that tracks all 50+ years of Boston Pride history.
The Rise and Fall of Boston Pride will be available for pre-order starting today and will be released on June 1, 2025 at major retailers and online platforms in hardcover, softcover, e-book, and audiobook formats.
